Morricone...and then some
With mariachi trumpets blaring from the off, AlascA feel like a band trying to be Morricone. But listen on and ‘Prospero’ turns out to be something far more unexpected. This is a record that goes way beyond simple spaghetti western covers. After a first album of progressive folk, AlascA have returned with all guns blazing. The Amsterdam four-piece define ‘Prospero’ as European Country but even this label doesn’t do the record justice. Trumpet blasts and saloon pianos meet eerie slide guitars and pounding drums to produce an album that is a thrilling ride throughout. Energetic opener ‘In Medias Res’ provides an exhilarating start which is followed by the California-inspired ‘Cult’, a song with more than a hint of ‘The Thrills’.
However, the highlight is ‘Borges’, a pulsating Calexico-esque track that shifts and moves from strange rhythms to an incredible crescendo halfway through. According to the album notes, ‘Propsero’ is a special 25th anniversary edition having been re-released in 2040. While it's debatable whether AlascA’s music will be remembered so well in a quarter of a century, with records like this they’ve certainly get a great chance.

An Amsterdam-based folk-prog quartet led by songwriter Frank Bond, Alasca's critically acclaimed 2012 debut album, Actors & Liars, which was produced by Alan Branch, peaked at number nine in the Dutch charts the week after its release. Sophomore effort Prospero followed in 2015, and showed a diversified sound, taking influence from spaghetti westerns, mariachi, and indie rock. The group referred to its sound as "European Country."
