Given the massive influence and lasting popularity of John Fogerty's work with Creedence Clearwater Revival, you'd think that someone would have thought to put together an all-star tribute album to Fogerty by now, but as it happens, Chooglin': A Tribute to the Songs of John Fogerty is only the second attempt to date to document his impact on several generations of musicians (the first was an endearing but odd set assembled by a Finnish label, John Fogerty Wrote a Song for Everyone). Chooglin' is certainly to be credited for it eclecticism; while one might expect a pack of like-minded roots rockers to be assembled for a set like this, executive producer Niall Hood has thrown in several artists who take these songs to unexpected places, such as the electronic slacker pop of Gingersol's "Up Around the Bend," the low-key groove of Meredith Ochs & the Damn Lovelys' "Hey Tonight," Frog Holler's neo-bluegrass take on "Don't Look Now," the high-octane rock of Gringoman's "Run Through the Jungle" (featuring Eric "Roscoe" Ambel), and the rootsy electronic vibe of "Keep On Chooglin'" by Western Electric (starring former Long Ryders leader Sid Griffin). But sadly, for every distinctive performance that illuminates a new side of one of Fogerty's great songs, there's another which sounds pleasant but unnecessary, and most of the artists on board simply aren't particularly distinguished. Chooglin' leaves no doubt of the participants' enthusiasm for Fogerty's music, but these songs would be better off performed by people who can better communicate the passion that made CCR's music so great.
