Specializing in a unique worldbeat hybrid of American folk, blues, and the rhythmically unfixed Middle Eastern traditional style known as taqsim, Netherlands-based No Blues call what they play "Arabicana," and it's an apt term. Essentially a trio of American, Middle Eastern, and Dutch musicians, with ex-Deirdre and W.A.T. member Ad Van Meurs on guitar, Haytham Safia on oud, and former Marbletones member Anne-Maarten Van Heuvelen on bass, No Blues also featured percussionist Osama Maleegi, vocalist Ankie Keultjes, and drummer Eric Vanderlest on 2005's Farewell Shalabiye and 2007's Ya Dunya (which also included a prominent and active guest spot from Tracy Bonham on violin and vocals).

REVIEW
‘Kind of No blues’ is a double album which contains two CD’s with the
best live tracks and new songs. On the studio CD you find twelve new
tracks that feature special international guests. Bill Barrett’s (Hazmat
Modine, US) virtuoso blues harp playing is heard on ‘Nafura’ and the
voice of the’godfather of R&B’ Andre Williams (US) is heard on the
‘Waterpipe’. There are also more unexpected contributions by Dutch
novelist Vrouwkje Tuinman and Iraqi poet Rodaan Al Galidi.
The collaboration between NO blues and Quartet Quinetique
combines Arabicana with modern classical music in a whole new
sound. Jos Beeren brings the sound of the ‘roaring thirties’ back to life
and Morad Khoury contributes his lyrical Arabic violin playing to the
track ‘Go on’.

The live CD with thirteen of the best No blues live tracks gives a great
overview of the previous four albums. On the live CD three guest
musicians appear; the Palestinian singer Shereene Danialle, Morad
Khoury on violin and Belgian diatonic button-accordion player Sophie
Cavez. All these guests also contributed to previous NO blues albums.

Kind of NO blues is a remarkable musical journey that touches the
boundaries of Arabicana, the combination between American folk
blues and Arabic music. A genre that has been formed and shaped by
this remarkable band called No blues.
