Randy Bachman is a Canadian rock guitarist and singer. He was born in Winnipeg and was a member of Chad Allen & the Expressions, which evolved into the Guess Who, the most successful Canadian rock band of the 1960s. He left the Guess Who in July 1970, made a solo album, Axe, and then formed Brave Belt, which evolved by 1972 into Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO). He left BTO in April 1977, made a second solo album, Survivor (1978), and then launched a new band, Ironhorse, in 1979, but was back touring with the Guess Who in 1983 and then with BTO by 1984. Another solo album, Any Road, was released on Guitar Recordings in 1993. The live Every Song Tells a Story appeared in 2002 from True North, followed by JazzThing in 2004 from Maximum Jazz. The Bachman Cummings Songbook saw the light in 2006. Also in 2006, Bachman issued a collection of unreleased Bachman Cummings project songs (originally recorded in 1987) dubbed The Thunderbird Trax. In 2007, another jazz-flavored release (JazzThing II) was issued, along with the Bachman Cummings cover album Jukebox. A DVD document of Bachman's July 7, 2007 live performance at the Montreal Jazz Festival was issued in July of 2008. For the 2008 holidays, Bachman released an album of Christmas favorites (Takin' Care of Christmas) -- with the titular track being a reworked version of the BTO classic "Takin' Care of Business." In 2010 Bachman and Fred Turner issued an eponymous studio album (Bachman & Turner), and in 2015 Bachman released the star-studded solo outing Heavy Blues, which featured appearances from Neil Young, Jeff Healey, Joe Bonamassa, and Peter Frampton.

John Bush
Burton Cummings, born in Winnipeg in 1947, played with the Devrons before joining the Guess Who as lead vocalist in 1965. Cummings spent ten years with that band, but left for a solo career, releasing a self-titled album in 1976. The single, "Stand Tall," sold over a million copies. He has also released My Own Way to Rock (1977), Dream of a Child (1978), Woman Love (1980), Sweet Sweet (1981) and Plus Signs (1990).

The Thunderbird Trax is a collection of unreleased songs from 1987. Released independently during the brief Bachman-Cummings incarnation it was exclusively sold at shows on their First Time Around tour. In June 1987, the two got together in New York City, where they received an award for more than a million airplays of These Eyes and started talking about collaborating on an album. As the story goes…Burton would drive up Randy's place in BC from Los Angeles in his 1966 Ford Thunderbird (which appears on the CD cover)They got together at and started working on some songs. With the MTV music culture not interested in classic rock the master tape got put aside. In 2004, Randy bought the old Thunderbird from Burton and took it to the Thunderbird Car Club of Vancouver to be restored. As Randy explains in the liner notes: “While getting the car cleaned up and restored, I was given a bag of junk stuff that was in the car: pencils, manuals, tire gauge, old registration and a tape. To my amazement, the tape had every song we had recorded in the tool shed.” Among the eight tracks, six are Bachman/Cummings co-writes, and they each have a self-penned cut, with both Bachman an Cummings playing all the instruments.

Taking a page from the book Ray Davies wrote in the '90s, Randy Bachman launched the Vinyl Tap Tour: Every Song Tells a Story in 2013, designing the concert as a guided journey through his past. He sang hits from the Guess Who, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, and his solo career, interspersing stories along the way, adding the biographical song "Prairie Town" as a framing device. This 2014 set -- which is available in a couple of incarnations, including one that has a DVD and one that has a CD of the concert -- generally has a lower energy level than the original recordings but the relaxed vibe is part of the appeal: it's not a race, it's a nostalgic stroll with the amiable Bachman. If you're on the same wavelength as him, it's an enjoyable way to pass the time.
